Meet the Parents Special Edition DVD Review:

Just in time for the release of the much anticipated sequel, Meet the Fockers, Universal has released a bonus edition DVD of the original hit, Meet the Parents. Jay Roach’s film goes beyond any nightmare any guy may have ever had, and enters into a universe where nothing can go right on the
first meeting of the parents of a girlfriend. The subject of torture is Greg "Gaylord” Focker, played by Ben Stiller. Meet the Parents came out about the time Ben Stiller was becoming a household name, well known for being a likable but often troubled hero. Meet the Parents is a perfect example of Stiller at his best, at times reminiscent of Jack Lemmon, but easily able to switch over to more of a Jim Carey style of humor as well.

While the film showcases Stiller’s ability for comedy, more were surprised to see Robert De Niro’s softer side. While De Niro had done Analyze This and Wag the Dog prior to Meet the Parents, neither of these films had a pet cat eating bacon from his mouth.

There are other fantastically humorous sequences in the film including the small role of Pam’s ex-boyfriend, played by Owen Wilson. Anyone who has been watching comedies the past five years knows how well Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller work together. There is an undeniable ease at the way the jokes seem to flow between the two of them making them one of the greatest comedy duos
in years.

Although I enjoy Meet the Parents a great deal I remember enjoying it less the first time I saw it. In fact, I remember being more stressed out by the
dreadful humor than anything else. After seeing how the film ended however, watching the film a second and third time has become much more enjoyable.

The new bonus edition attempts to make watching the film even more enjoyable with a great deal of special features. Some of the special features are likely to appeal to only a certain number of viewers. Animal lovers may be curious to find out how the animal tricks were done in the featurette Silly Cat Tricks. There is also a featurette about lie detectors
and how they really work. The special feature which has been advertised the most however is the outtakes. There are a great deal of outtakes, but not all of them seem that interesting or funny. For the most part it just seems silly.

The DVD also came with a free ticket to Meet the Fockers, but the expiration is past and anyone looking to buy the DVD now shouldn’t add that
as a selling point. Overall it isn’t much more, rather than much different than the past Meet the Parents DVD, but if you are a huge fan it may be a good buy.
