Northern Exposure: Season Two DVD Review:

When seven time Emmy Award winning serio-comedy Northern Exposure first aired in the early 90’s it wasn’t one of the shows that I made a habit of watching. For some reason it never interested me, and that hadn’t changed in the least when the seasons begin to be released on DVD along with every other semi-successful show from the past. When I finally sat down to watch it, I found myself pleasantly surprised. As much of a sleeper as is possible in television, Northern Exposure is slightly irritating, but soon the quirky characters grow more and more likable, with every episode spent with them. It seems to work much like the show works. Northern Exposure is about a group of people living in small town named Cicely in Alaska. The new doctor can’t stand to be in Alaska, having once lived in New York and having just lost his girlfriend in the first episode of the season, but the more time he spends in the small town, the more the people begin to grow on him. I found that the more episodes that I watched the more I began to like the characters and the show itself.

The highlight of the series of episodes is watching the new doctor and his verbal nemesis flirt on the edge of love and hate. She has a boyfriend out
of town but the writers continually tease us with the idea of the two of them becoming more than enemies.

The other fun and unique element of the show is the mystical additions of the Indian culture and superstitions contrasting with the doctor’s practical
opinions. Most times it seems as though the only reason to have this plot twist is in order to put the doctor even further out of his element, and it
succeeds, always proving the Indian tradition to be the true one.

Although I never watched the show when it originally aired, it seems that I may have appreciated it a bit more then. It still stands today but for some reason it seems slightly dated and I can’t say that I would recommend buying the DVD unless already a fan of the show. The DVD, with its creative cloth covering shaped somewhat like a winter coat. There are also a few special features, something not often seen in television DVD distribution. There aren’t many but the features there are may please some die-hard fans. There
are some deleted scenes, not many of which being of great importance, and unexposed footage. Like the DVD, the special features may only be fully
appreciated by fans of the show when it first aired.
