Season of the Hunted DVD Review:

Low budget digital horror film Season of the Hunted has a promising premise that in no way delivers. It only takes about five minutes to realize that it is the worst case of B-film trying to be something better. Had Season of the Hunted not tried to be something more poignant than it was capable of, it may have succeeded in being entertaining if nothing else. What could have been either a more humorous film, if taken less seriously, or a scarier film, had it been more well made, ended up just being plain bad.

The main character Steve has gotten four of his friends together to take a bow-hunting trip. Steve is a New York City firefighter in what seems like a strange attempt to give honor to the victims of 9/11. When the hunting trip suddenly turns horrific and the five hunters turn into the hunted, only Steve’s friend Frank can save them by using his military experience. If Frank fails then all of them will become dinner to a strange group of cannibalistic rednecks.

Although there are some good qualities in Season of the Hunted, it’s the bad ones that stick out. Whether it is the bad photography, both quality and angles chosen, the horrific acting, or the strange use of rock music as the soundtrack, there are just too many moments that make this film near un-watch able.

Some of the violence is done creatively, seeming horrific without ever showing too much. It would have been much easier to do some cheesy effects, yet instead the filmmakers choose to rely on editing tricks. If anything good can be said about Season of the Hunted, that would be the only big thing I could come up with.

The DVD relies on the use of a cover which does not fit the film in the least, but looks good, in order to trick people into buying or renting it. Don’t be fooled. It’s all down hill from the cover art. On top of that nothing about the DVD is well produced. The video looks awful, although that should be blamed on the filmmakers, the audio is bad, and there are no special features worth mentioning. Nothing in the film or DVD is good enough for me to recommend.
