This
Raymond Briggs cartoon, first released in 1986, finally gets
its DVD launch in the UK and Europe.
People often
think cartoons are all lighthearted fun and happiness, but don’t
be fooled – this is no walk in the park. Brigg’s
chilling tale was inspired by the fearful days of 1980s Britain,
with the shadow of a potential nuclear war was hanging heavy
over the nation.
The cartoon
depicts the moving and painfully sad story of two elderly people,
Jim and Hilda Bloggs, who try to keep a stiff upper lip during
the events that unfold. A war looms ahead and they reminisce
over their World War II experiences, unaware that what is to
happen will be distinctly unlike anything they have seen before.
They are
dinosaurs in the modern, cruel world, usually misunderstanding
the government’s advice. What begins as an amusing, endearing
tale turns darker as the attack gets underway.
After the
brutal warfare, nuclear winter ensues, and while the couple
try to carry on, their decline is shocking and difficult to
watch.
The soundtrack,
provided chiefly by Roger Waters from Pink Floyd, who created
the music especially for the film, is evocative and perfectly
matched to the drama.
This film
remains as pertinent today as ever, and serves as a timely reminder
of the futility and pointlessness of war.
