internet Magazine in the UK ran a full page on us in its Home
Improvement section. Although they mentioned a lot of things
we could improve we are quite happy for this advice, we could
have paid an absolute fortune for this professional advice,
and instead we got it free. A transcript is below and we address
everything they say we could do better.
Run
by 28 year old Gary Gray The Z Review is a movie site with
a difference- you'll only find bad reviews. Gary used Dreamweaver
1.2 to build the site because it lets him see exactly what
the final layout will look like, and also makes site management
easier.
Yes
Dreamweaver is excellent, and a boon for site management,
saves me many a headache.
The
site's main page is rather text heavy, yet doesn't really
give you any useful information. This can be avoided- you
shouldn't really need to describe what your site's search
engine is for, and the 60 word description of the news pages
could be summed up in one word - News. The page uses a typical
navigation sidebar layout, and the text on the nav buttons
should be enough to let people know where they lead.
Excellent
advice and totally fair, I had planned the front page to look
like that only temporarily,as an intro to a New site, but
this only made me change it quicker to a page where all the
updates to the site are placed.
If
you're prepared to invest a little time learning basic JavaScript
you can learn how to bring up more detailed descriptions of
the options in the browser's status bar when the visitor moves
the mouse over the buttons. Alternatively, most current Web
authoring tools should help you to produce this effect automatically.
Not
sure about this, Mouse Over in the Status Bar has always reminded
me of a cheap trick, similar to the Blink tag, maybe when
I have some spare time. But definetely NOT a priority, I mean
how many people look at the Browser status bar?
The
site's main page could be better employed providing details
of the latest content additions - such as the latest content
reviews and and movie news headlines.
Agreed
and implemented as I already said above.
Most
of the site's content consists of scathing reviews and features
on mainstream Hollywood Cinema. If, like most of us, you find
yourself increasingly irritated by the poor quality of blockbuster
movies then you'll enjoy the site's angle. Some of the content
is not clearly focused - anyone going to the news section
would expect to find movie news but will be confronted with
over 20 menu options for different news services. Gary has
clearly got a bit carried away with all the free news services
on the web. Few people are going to use a site like this if
they're looking for the latest news headlines or technology
news - but they will use a site like this if they're looking
for movie news. If you have a site, it's important to decide
what you want it to be about. The news button on a movie site
should take visitors straight to the movie news - it's that
simple.
Agreed,
up to a point. I have amended the news page so that you are
taken straight to the Movie news section, but I have put the
menu options in a table on the right hand side of the page.
MY reason for adding the news services was to add to the community
feel of the site, IE use it as a one stop site for all your
net needs. I use the news services myself and I find them
a great way to keep up without surfing elsewhere, ie stickiness,
and that is an important factor on the net too.
Finally
this site desperately needs a decent URL. With its current
address, it doesn't stand much chance of succeeding. People
look at URL's like this and automatically assume it points
to a third rate home page, since any site worth its salt would
have a bespoke address. He could get www.thezreview.co.uk
for around £20a year.
Totally
agree, and as you can see we did get it, but cheaper than
they said at £9.99 for TWO years !
