30th January 2004: Destino Update:
The resurrection of "DESTINO", the result of a 1946
collaboration between Salvador Dali and Walt Disney has been
nominated for an Academy Award as Best Animated Short Film.
The idea began when the two artists met at a party in Hollywood
and decided to make a short film together, with Dali spending
eight months working with director John Hench at the Disney
studio, painting, drawing and discussing how to add motion to
his images. But in 1947 the studio ran into financial trouble
and the unfinished project was shelved in the Disney vaults
for the next 54 years. In 1999, executive producer Roy Disney,
director Dominique Monfery, producer Baker Bloodworth, and 95
year-old John Hench, finally finished the film. "Destino"
is a surreal story of 'love and destiny' told through shifting
dream-like images created by Dali, set to the music of Mexican
ballad "Destino," by Armando Dominguez. The Oscar-nominated
film will also be included in "Dali 2004," a Spanish
exhibit celebrating the 100-year anniversary of Dali's birth,
opening February 5th in Barcelona.

30th January 2004: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Update:
Great scoop from Empire Online (http://www.empireonline.co.uk)
today as they interviewed Mike Newell in connection with Harry
Potter and he won't be making it into two movies as was widely
thought "As far as I'm concerned it's absolutely possible
to do it in one. I think it would be slightly embarrassing to
do it in two. It's a classic paranoid thriller in a way. I've
spent Christmas watching things like The Parallax View and The
Insider and Three Days of the Condor. What you have is a story
at the beginning of which the powers of evil have a plan, which
is absolutely not revealed to your hero. The kid just wonders
into another year at school, then this huge notion of the competition
surprises him. But there is, of course, a malign intelligence
which is manipulating things. And so he gets more and more suspicious
until there is a shoot-out between him and the bad guy. That's
a really good, strong thriller shape."

30th January 2004: Miracle Update:
Darrin has been in touch with the following " I was an
extra during a few scenes and they also used my car, a bright
GREEN 1970 American Motors Gremlin. This was when they were
filming a scene in Rossland, BC, Canada. It is the scene when
Kurt Russel is driving around in his powder blue Dodge Dart,
looking for a christmas gift for his wife. (This is what I was
told from the director). The original idea for the scene was
to use me (driving my car) and a blue '69 Volkswagen Bug to
be "traffic" in the scene. I thought this was very
fitting as back in the '70s, the Gremlin was the VW Bug's direct
competition.
Unfortunately, as it turned out, Main Street in Rossland was
not wide enough for them to be able to drive the Filming rig
(with Kurt Russel and Dodge Dart) and have traffic. So my car
was used in front of the "Lake Placid Library" and
I was an extra during several scenes."

Well discussions about whether Pixar would continue their relationship
with Disney after their contract for seven movies was completed
have finally broken down, with the announcement that Pixar will
strike out on their own at the end of the deal. While this is
no surprise, one can't help but wonder if the problems over
the Toy Story franchise where Disney called the two Toy Story
movies only one part of their deal wasn't a major souring point
on the partnership. Either way, interesting and uncharted territories
for both companies ahead.
