The Hollywood
Reporter have posted details on what film may be up for
the Best Visual Effects and Best Sound Editing Oscars(r).
The Academy
of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced its shortlists
from which Oscar nominees will be drawn in the categories
of visual effects and sound editing. "Harry Potter and
the Chamber of Secrets," "The Lord of the Rings:
The Two Towers," "Minority Report," "Spider-Man"
and "XXX" are on both lists while "Star Wars,
Episode II - Attack of the Clones" and "Men In Black
II" made up the seven on the visual effects list. "
Road To Perdition" and "We Were Soldiers" completed
the Best Sound Editing list. The Hollywood Reporter explains
where things go from here.
Ten-minute clip reels from each of the seven
films recognized for sound editing will be screened Feb. 4
for the sound editing award committee in a process that is
commonly referred to as a bake-off. The visual effects nominating
committee will stage its own bake-off the following evening,
screening 15-minute clip reels from the seven contenders.
The sound editing category carries its own set of rules: If
two or three productions receive the required votes, they
will become the nominated films in the category. If only one
film receives the required votes, it will be recommended to
the Academy's board of governors for a special achievement
award. If no film achieves the required votes, no award for
2002 will be given in the category. In the visual effects
category, three films will be nominated.
The nominations will be announced on February 14th. The Oscars
take place at the Kodak Theater, Hollywood on Sunday 23rd
March 2003.
