Antwone Fisher Movie Review:


Based on a true story, Antwone Fisher is a heartwarming movie that marks the directorial debut of actor Denzel Washington.Derek Luke stars as Antwone, a young sailor in the Navy that has an explosive temper that gets him into trouble with his shipmates and superior officers.

Behind his anger lies a history of child abuse in foster care and neglect while growing up in a poor neighborhood.At age 17 he became homeless and decided soon after to join the Navy to get out of living on the streets.

The Navy gives him a roof over his head, a salary and a job that probably saved him from being a criminal.When the Navy had enough of his hot temper, Antwone is ordered to take counseling from Naval psychiatrist Jerome Davenport (Denzel Washington) to deal with his behavioral problems.

At first things don't go so well cause Antwone is stubborn and doesn't trust anyone due to his past. Little by little Jerome gains Antwone's confidence and they become friends. Jerome is a positive mentor to Antwone and helps him deal with his past. Antwone even gets guidance from Jerome on dating.

This film shows how hope and the right people can change a young man's life for the better even with a past that otherwise would have easily ruined his future.Denzel does a wonderful job directing his first film as he creates some very powerful dramatic scenes with his cast that have emotional impact. It looks like he was very careful in trying to set the right tone while avoiding overindulging in the clichi world too much.

This movie presents an inspirational story without being too preachy or convoluted while being at the same time entertaining.

If you are looking for a feel good enjoyable movie that shows how perseverance and the right guidance can change a man's life from hopelessness to success than Antwone Fisher is for you.
