Blind
Spot: Hitler's Secretary Movie Review:
Blind
Spot: Hitlers Secretary is a compelling documentary
of Traudl Junges confessional stories as Adolf Hitlers
secretary during some of the
darkest times the world has ever experienced.
"I
find it hard to forgive myself," Junge tells the interviewer
Andre Heller of the evil that Hitler brought onto the world.
The title of the film
refers the part of Junges mind where she was actually
ambivalent to the actuality of Hitlers reign. Junge
admits to liking Hitler, who is held as a
powerful, quite, and sincere leader in the stories that
are revealed. The 80-year old Junge was hoping to be a dancer
when she was 22 years old, but through a sequence of events
she actually became the secretary for the Fuhrer himself.
Throughout
the film, Junge reflects on all the situations and instances
at Hitlers bunker from 1942 to the last days of WWII.
Hitler did write Junge into his testament will and she heard
the gunshot when he committed suicide. Ashamed of the Holocaust
and actions by Hitler, Junge remained quite for 60 years
until telling story a few years ago for a novel, and then
for this film.
The
insight and stories are interesting, especially for history
buffs. The manipulation of Hitler is fully exposed by Junge.
The last thirty minutes
of the interview will have you totally engulfed.
The
filmmakers do not do anything extravagant. They literally
sit Junge down, places the camera on her, and let her tell
her story. The interviewer
is only heard once or twice implementing questions to her.
The film does cut to Junge watching the interview on tape;
she then gives more commentary to what she is saying. The
filmmaking is standard, but the story makes this unforgettable.
"It
wasnt what he said, but the way he said things and
how he did things."
Traudl
Junge died from cancer in February of 2002, hours after
Blind Spot: Hitlers Secretary premiered at the 52nd
Berlin International Film Festival.
This
not a flashy documentary with reenactments or quick transitions,
but it is a powerful one that gives great insight into one
of the most manipulative and evil minds of history.
