Adam Sandler
is Longfellow Deeds, a small town pizzeria owner who inherits
$40 billion when his New York uncle dies in the goofball comedy
Mr. Deeds.
He was
happy with his life in the tiny community of Mandrake Falls,
New Hampshire and had no idea he had a rich uncle. That is
until one of his rich uncle’s top executive, the cold
hearted mean Chuck Cedar (Peter Gallagher) travels from New
York to find Deeds and tell him the news.
You see,
the conniving Chuck wants Deeds to travel with him to New
York and sign the company over to him in return for $40 billion.
Then Chuck can break up the company, sell it in pieces, make
a fortune and fire everybody.
Shortly
after he arrives in New York, Deeds becomes tabloid fodder.
The media goes to no end to follow him around and manipulate
the truth to make Deeds look like an uncultured imbecile who
can’t handle life in the big city.
Working
as a television producer for a sleazy show called “Inside
Access” is Babe Bennett (Winona Ryder) who gets caught
up in the media frenzy for exclusive dirt on Deeds. She gets
close to him by pretending to be a damsel in distress. It
doesn’t take long for Deeds to fall in love with her.
Since
Babe is really nice deep down and also is in love with Deeds
, she decides she can’t trick Deeds anymore. Before she
can tell him the truth, Deeds finds out anyway and dumps her.
Mr. Deeds gets a broken heart and it looks like the bad guys
are winning. Can you guess what happens next? Will good triumph
over evil? It is not that difficult.
Mr. Deeds
is full of odd eccentric characters that become part of the
running gag in this story of a simple well meaning country
boy type outmaneuvering and sticking it to the big wig rich
arrogant metropolitan jerks.
One of
the most hilarious roles is of the sneaky personal butler
Emilio (John Turturro) who appears and disappears when least
expected.
If you
are looking for a silly fun time where jokes are thrown at
you almost constantly Adam Sandler style, then this film is
for you. Come expecting a simple predictable story that doesn’t
break any new ground but has a few very outrageous funny moments
and you’ll have a pretty good time.
