Sex & Lucia Movie Review:

Lucia (Paz Vega) is a young waitress living in Madrid who falls in love with a writer named Lorenzo (Tristan Ulloa) and subsequently all kinds of strange events ensue in the romantic drama Sex and Lucia (Lucia el Sexo).

Initially Lucia seeks Lorenzo and finds him in his bar hangout. She tells him she is crazy about him, wants to live with him and be his girlfriend. Without much hesitation he accepts. He tells her normally beautiful women don’t go chasing after him. She doesn’t care cause all she wants is to be with Lorenzo.

For a while their relationship is great. They have great sex together and enjoy each other’s company. She especially likes to read the latest pages Lorenzo has written for his new book while he sleeps. Not much later Lorenzo falls into a deep depression and Lucia can’t figure out why.

But wait, it gets complicated form here. Mixing up the past and the present, the imaginary and the real, director Julio Medem brings out a story of passion and heartache that is at times hard to follow.

After Lorenzo has an accident, Lucia fearing the worst and without checking further regarding the fate of her boyfriend, she decides to escape to a secluded Mediterranean island.

She ends up at a sort of a bed and breakfast run by Elena (Najwa Nimri) who just happens to have had a kid with Lorenzo after a one night stand in the ocean a long long time ago.

It seems everybody on that island is escaping some pain from the past. What dark memories are they trying to run away from?

Basically the film revolves around Lucia, her boyfriend Lorenzo, his past that catches up with him and how later Lucia discovers the truth about him. That includes his short sexual escapade with Elena that results in an illegitimate child that only later does Lorenzo finds out about. His fling with Belen (Elena Anaya), the babysitter of his child and the tragedy that results from that.

The director stated that the main theme of the film was escaping from the dark into the light and he uses different visual symbols such as the sea and the sun to make his point. Another idea that he presents his that you can go back to the middle of the story and start again. You figure that one out.

Besides being a bit long and drawn out, Sex and Lucia brings out interesting twists and turns that are fresh and effective. If you like lots of explicit passionate sex with full frontal male and female nudity, then definitely you will be able to bear the slow and confusing elements of this film.

Sex and Lucia offers something different from your typical romantic relationship drama and adds interesting surprises that you might just find enjoyable.
