Till Human Voices Wake Us Movie Review:

Prufrock, Poetry, and Personal Tragedy

“Till Human Voices Wake Us” is a very personal film about tragic loss, repression of that memory and a journey to find release and rebirth. If you have the patience, this film takes a languid pace down memory lane with haunting results. It is nicely shot, well acted, with trustworthy Guy Pearce and Helena Bonham Carter in the leads, and has authentic locations in rural Australia where time seems to have come to a halt decades ago. Add a good supporting cast and a balanced, melodic score and you have a film version of a very good “One Step Beyond” episode from the early ‘60’s.

I can recommend this to a young filmgoer who can wait for the subtle payoff at the end, and the nominal cineaste that enjoys ethereal romance in the old-fashioned style. If you have been an excessive movie addict for many years, you have probably consumed many of the elements at work here, a multiplicity of times. But if you want to escape urban sprawl, crowded expressways, noisy game shows, nightclub pyrotechnics, crashing cars, breaking glass, explosive wars, doomed airliners, imploding skyscrapers, heads of state stating headless foreign policy, play station mayhem, gang killings, fanatic religious zealots, clamoring cell phones, screaming radio talk show hosts and all other invasions of our peace of mind, this may be the ticket. But if you’re looking for a visceral rush, an intellectual challenge, or an original edgy experiment, this won’t be your cup of tea.

If you decide to see this dreamy melodrama, draw a warm bath (but not deep enough to drown), light some candles, put some Holst on the hi-fi, and regale yourself with some T.S. Eliot before departing for the theatre. Then you should be in the right frame of mind to enjoy this modest effort to it’s fullest potential. LET us go then, you and I.
