The
Triumph of Love Movie Review:
Triumph
of Love is a silly comedy that takes place in the 18th century
about a beautiful Princess (Mira Sorvino) who falls in love
with her sworn enemy Agis (Jay Rodan). She sits on the throne
stolen long ago by her deceased father.
The
rightful heir is Agis who was born in prison then smuggled
out and raised in secret exile by the headstrong philosopher
Hemocrates (Ben Kingsley) and his sister Leontine (Fiona
Shaw).
They
live now in a huge Italian villa where most of the movie
takes place.
After
seeing him naked near a lake, the Princess falls madly for
Agis and decides to go to his mansion in disguise as a man
and win him over. She her lady-in-waiting Corinne (Rachael
Stirling) pretend they are two young lads. The Princess
acts if she is a traveling philosophy student Phocion and
Corinne becomes his valet Hermidas.
Upon
her arrival at Agis estate, the Princess bribes the
henchmen Arlequin (Ignazio Oliva) the gardner (Luis Moteni)
to help her gain access to the villa.
Once
that is accomplished, the Princess seduces Agis, Hemocrates
and Leonitne to break their anti-romantic defenses and win
the love of Agis. She uses her abundant charm and lots of
deception to appeal to each ones very different desires.
In the
beginning her plan works perfectly but soon after it unravels
as one by one they discover they have been played with by
an imposter.
All
the while for some odd reason in the movie, you see every
once in a while an audience dressed in modern clothing watching
the story unfold.
Since
director Clare Peploe gives you the feeling that you are
watching a play and not a film there is really no reason
for these strange audience sequences.
Triumph
of Loves main problem is that its not that funny.
Mira puts on an English accent and seems to have a lot of
pleasurable with her part but thats not enough to
save this bland film.
Furthermore,
the main cast has very little chemistry between them which
doesnt help to get you to pay attention.
The
film is also very talky with dialogue that seems like somebodys
version of old English. If you like that sort of thing then
you might find this film somewhat entertaining.
For
the rest of you, Triumph of Love will either put you to
sleep or drive you nuts with its uninviting eccentricities.
